GTest Arena
GTest Arena is a deathmatch against computer opponents in the level from the sample game that shipped with the Genesis3D engine at the turn of the millennium. Run, jump, grab whatever is lying around, and frag the bots before they frag you. The one with the most kills when you stop playing wins. When you die, fire to come back.
How to play
- WASD to move, SPACE to jump
- Mouse to aim, left button to fire
- 1 to 4 pick the weapon: blaster, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, shredder
- TAB shows the scoreboard, and it comes up by itself when you die
- Walk over weapons, ammo, armour and health to take them. They come back later
- Doors open when you get close. Lifts start when you stand on them
- Rocket jumps work: a rocket at your feet throws you up
- Click the game to capture the mouse, ESC to release it, fire to respawn
The bots
Every bot has a name and its own skin. They chase health when they are hurt, go for weapons when they are outgunned, keep their distance with the shredder, back off when you get too close, retreat when they are losing and hunt you down when they cannot see you. They also shoot each other, so stand back and let them thin each other out if you want to.
What you see
Fire, smoke and sparks on every explosion, rocket trails, scorch marks and blood on the walls and floor, a red flash and a kick when you are hit, a kill feed with everyone's names, and a scoreboard with kills and deaths.
About
GTest Arena is a fan recreation of the Genesis3D sample game, running on Nord, a small 3D engine I am writing in C and C++ with an API in the style of Blitz3D. It runs in the browser through WebGL 2: baked lightmaps, skinned characters, physics, a cube map sky, particles, decals and navigation graphs for the bots. It is not the original engine: the level, the characters and the sounds were converted and the rules, weapons and bot decisions were ported by hand from the original source.
Credits
- Original game, level, characters, models and sounds: Genesis3D GTest by Eclipse Entertainment, L.L.C. (Genesis3D Public License 1.01, which explicitly lets the sample game be modified and used)
- Game rules, weapons and bot behaviour ported from the original source code
- Engine, converters and everything else: Nord
- Audio: miniaudio
